Rapid Popularity of Travel Carts in Southeast Asia

Market Drivers and Procurement Guidelines from the Perspective of Manufacturers

In the past 18 months, as an OEM/ODM manufacturer of baby strollers, we have received a 210% increase in inquiries from the Southeast Asian market. Distributors and importers in Thailand, Indonesia, and Vietnam coincidentally prioritize travel strollers, lightweight strollers, and boarding strollers.

This trend is not accidental — there are clear structural drivers behind it.

1. Why Southeast Asia? Three Real Driving Forces

Increased penetration rate of low-cost aviation

The popularity of AirAsia, Lion Air, and Jet Airways has enabled Southeast Asian families to have an average of 2–3 short haul flights per year. Traditional trolleys cannot adapt to cabin luggage racks, and aviation applicable trolleys have become a must-have.

Urban residential density continues to rise

The median area of apartments in Bangkok, Jakarta, and Manila has decreased, while shopping malls and public transportation have become more specific in their requirements for compact and folded strollers to have a smaller footprint. Folding and compact strollers have become the preferred choices for urban parents.

Change in intergenerational travel habits

In the past, grandparents tended to “carry and walk” when taking care of their children. Nowadays, young parents hope to be able to use newborn travel strollers (close to lying flat + total weight ≤ 5.5kg) from the neonatal stage. Therefore, ultra light strollers and portable strollers have entered the high-frequency search.

2. Buyer’s Primary Concern: Compliance Risk Is Higher Than Price

Based on our handling of multiple cases of product delisting and customs clearance in the Southeast Asian market, the following three compliance issues are most commonly overlooked:

Inconsistent standards

  • Thailand: TIS 2236-2558 (basic reference to ISO 31110)
  • Indonesia: SNI certification, some tests need to be completed in local laboratories
  • Vietnam: accepts EN 1888, but requires additional registration with the Industry and Commerce Bureau

Lightweight and structural strength cannot be chosen between the two

Some ultra light strollers use thin-walled aluminum tubes or low standard plastic parts for weight reduction. Under the high temperature, humidity, and uneven road conditions in Southeast Asia, the risk of joint fatigue fracture significantly increases.

Our factory has conducted 30,000 push-pull fatigue tests and 30cm obstacle impact tests on compact trolley frames, far exceeding the basic standard requirements.

Independent requirements for chemical substance restrictions

In addition to EU REACH and US CPSIA, Thailand has the Hazardous Substances Act B.E. 2551, which sets independent limits for phthalates in coatings and plastics. Double inspection is required before export, otherwise it may be subject to spot checks and detention.

3. Key Points for Product Selection: What Characteristics Determine Terminal Sales

Based on the return order data we supply to Southeast Asian chain mother and baby stores, the following configurations are directly associated with sales conversion:

One-handed folding operation

The one-handed folding strollers has the highest conversion rate in the terminal demonstration. After receiving the strollers, it needs to automatically lock the hook, and the exhibition of the strollers can be completed in one step.

Any model that requires bending over with both hands has been reported by the store as “no one is willing to try it out.”

Cabin and wheels adapted to local signs and road conditions

  • Suggested cabin length: 86–92cm (suitable for 2–3 year old children in Southeast Asia)
  • Rear wheel diameter ≥ 15cm, made of EVA or rubber material (to deal with tile gaps and shallow pits)

Sunshade and ventilation

UPF50+ extended sunshade + breathable windows to cope with strong ultraviolet rays and sudden rain weather throughout the year.

4. Procurement Practice: How to Choose Strollers Suppliers and Cooperation Models

OEM vs. Wholesalers

Wholesalers can quickly assemble goods through strollers, but cannot modify the structure and color.

Directly cooperate with cart OEM or ODM factories, with a minimum order quantity of usually 500–1000 units, and receive exclusive color schemes, brand nameplates, and targeted compliance documents.

We suggest that the first batch of orders be tested in OEM mode, and then transferred to ODM development after returning the order.

List of documents that must be requested

  • Third party testing report (issued by SGS/TÜV, based on EN 1888 or ASTM F833)
  • Material flame retardant certificate
  • Regulatory declaration letter for the target country
Suppliers of strollers that do not provide or provide clear instructions should be rejected with one vote.

Delivery time and payment

Mature trolley manufacturers can control the delivery cycle from the factory to Jakarta or Bangkok ports within 45–55 days (for the first batch of orders).

The payment method is usually 30% advance payment + 70% upon receipt of a copy of the bill of lading.

When inquiring, please specify the requirement for a
“Southeast Asian Compliance Package + Three-piece English / Thai / Indonesian Instruction Manual Set.”

Do You Need to Evaluate Your Travel Stroller Product Plan?

If you are a local mother and baby distributor, chain purchaser, or cross-border importer in Southeast Asia, screening suppliers for travel strollers, lightweight strollers, or aviation applicable strollers, and paying attention to compliance risks and local adaptability — we can provide:
  • List of differentiated compliance documents and testing recommendations for the markets of Thailand / Indonesia / Vietnam / Malaysia
  • Sample testing videos of existing folding carts and ultra light carts (including folding size demonstration and road passability)
  • Based on your target selling price of 500–2000 units for the first order, reverse output BOM cost structure and optimization plan

Please indicate “Southeast Asian Travel Stroller Consultation” on the official website contact form and submit the target country and estimated monthly sales volume.

Our engineering and sales teams will respond with a targeted product selection evaluation report within 3 working days, instead of a standard quotation.
